Public Relations at Penn State - Is It a Good Choice?

Thinking of applying to Penn State for a degree in Public Relations. How's the program there? Do they offer a lot of hands-on experience and internship opportunities? Would love to hear from current students or alumni!

Penn State's Public Relations (PR) program is highly regarded, with a sound curriculum and many opportunities for experiential learning. As part of the College of Communications, it's unfortunately too often shadowed by Penn State's renowned Journalism program, but make no mistake, the PR program has its own strengths.

One of the best features of the program is the hands-on experience you'll get right from the start. The university's PRSSA chapter (Public Relations Student Society of America) is very active, offering students real-world experience through their own student-run PR firm. The firm works with local businesses and nonprofits, so you'll have a chance to apply what you're learning in class to real client situations.

Apart from in-house opportunities, the program offers a lot of support for securing internships. There are numerous networking opportunities through events and alumni connections, and it's not uncommon for students to intern at reputable PR firms in nearby metropolitan areas like Pittsburgh or Philadelphia.

Finally, the curriculum is designed with a strong emphasis on developing necessary skills for a PR career, such as strategic planning, writing, and campaign management. Also, the faculty have great industry experience which helps in understanding practical aspects of PR work.

Hence, the Public Relations program at Penn State definitely provides a solid foundation for a career in PR, while also offering numerous opportunities for applied learning and internships.
