When should I take the SAT during high school?

I'm a bit stressed about taking the SAT and I'm trying to figure out the best time to take it. Should I plan to take the SAT during my senior year or try to take it earlier, like junior year? What do you all think is the best strategy?

Hey there! No need to stress, you've got this! It's generally a good idea to take the SAT during your junior year. This timing allows you to get a benchmark score, and provides ample time to retake if necessary. Most students take the SAT for the first time in the spring of their junior year, which is a sweet spot because by then you've covered a majority of the relevant curriculum, but also leave yourself time to plan based on what score you receive. If you're not satisfied, you can study over the summer, when you'll have more time, and retake the SAT in the fall of your senior year.

This strategy also gives you time to get your scores to where you want them before early decision or early action deadlines, which are typically in November of your senior year. If you don't end up applying early anywhere, you can even take the SAT during December of your senior year, although you also want to be sure you're using your time efficiently. If you've taken the test twice already and only saw a small score improvement, taking it a third time, rather than working on your assignments for school or writing your application essays, probably won't be the best use of your time. Good luck!
