What would be considered a great SAT score?

Hey folks, just started prepping for my SATs and I'm still figuring out my target score. Can anyone here enlighten me about what's generally considered a 'great' SAT score?

A "great" SAT score is relative to your college aspirations, as different universities have different score expectations. Ideally, you should be aiming for a score that's at or above the 75th percentile for the schools you're interested in.

As of 2024, the SAT has a maximum score of 1600, with 800 each for Math and Reading & Writing. A score of 1200 would be about average. On the higher end, a score of 1400 or more is generally considered very good, and a score of 1500 or higher would be considered excellent on a national scale.

It's important to note that your SAT score is just one part of your college application and it is not the be-all, end-all. Many great institutions like New York University and the University of Chicago are test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle. This means that the SAT is not a requirement for admission at these schools.

In addition to your SAT score, selective schools will look at your GPA, your course rigor, your extracurricular involvement, your essays, and other factors. Remember, it's about the whole profile, not just a single number!
