About ACT Calculators...

Hey everyone! Quick question: What calculators are allowed on the ACT test day? And how crucial are they for cracking the Math section effectively? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! Your calculator can definitely be an asset on the ACT Math section. However, all of the questions on the ACT Math test can technically be solved without a calculator - the test makers are evaluating your math abilities, not your ability to use your calculator. You should treat your calculator as something to help you check your answers or make problem-solving more efficient, not the key to a high score.

While calculators can expedite solving some questions, they can slow you down if you attempt to solve every problem with them. Practice striking a balance between your mental math skills and strategic use of the calculator while preparing, and you're good to go!

As for what calculators are allowed, most standard scientific or graphing calculators are generally allowed. For example, calculators like the popular TI-84 or CASIO FX-115 are allowed. However, calculators with built-in Computer Algebra Systems, like TI-Nspire CAS or TI-89, are not permitted.

You'll also want to avoid calculators with paper tapes, "talking" calculators, calculators requiring an electrical outlet, cell phone calculators, or calculators with a typeface bigger than two inches. Remember to always check the ACT's most recent calculator policy before your test, to be 100% your calculator is allowed.

Finally, if you'd like to know more about how to prepare for the ACT effectively in general, including some tips that are specific to the Math section, I'd recommend checking out CollegeVine's series of free blog posts focused on ACT prep: https://blog.collegevine.com/category/standardized-tests/act/.
