About ACT and SAT - Are they equivalent?

Hey, does anyone have any insight into ACT and SAT scores? Like, are they seen as equivalent by colleges, or is one looked upon more favorably than the other? In my school, it seems like everyone’s always talking about the SAT, but I'm leaning more towards the ACT.

Absolutely, the ACT and SAT are seen as equivalent by colleges in the United States. Neither test is viewed more favorably in the college admissions process. Despite the differing sections and formatting within the tests themselves, admissions officers at all colleges will accept scores from either exam.

There was a time when the ACT was primarily taken by students in the Midwest, while the SAT ruled on the coasts, but those geographical tendencies no longer apply, and both tests are widely accepted across all US colleges. Today, the choice between one test or the other is just a matter of individual preparation and skill set.

For instance, the ACT includes a science section, unlike the SAT, but keep in mind this section tests your ability to interpret and analyze data, rather than your knowledge of specific scientific concepts. The SAT and ACT also have different pacing: the SAT gives more time per question, but some students find that having less time actually helps them perform better, as they trust their gut and don't second-guess themselves.

Bottom line is, there's no right or wrong test to take. You should choose the exam that plays to your strengths and makes you feel most comfortable. So, if you're leaning towards the ACT, you can rest assured that having an ACT instead of an SAT score will not negatively impact your college process in any way.

If you haven't already, I would consider taking a timed practice test of both the SAT and ACT. Based on your scores and your test-taking experience, you'll be able to better evaluate which exam fits your test-taking abilities and preferences.
