Minimum Requirements for MIT?

MIT's on my dream list, y'all! I know it's like super selective, but can anyone tell me the essential requirements they look for in a prospective student? I'm talking like GPA, test scores, ECs, the whole shebang. Thanks in advance!

MIT, like many selective colleges, doesn't have a strict minimum for GPA, SAT or ACT scores, but successful applicants typically have strong academic profiles. The middle 50% range for SAT scores in the most recent class is between 1520-1570 and the average unweighted GPA is around 3.95. Remember for the 2024-2025 application cycle, the SAT is fully digital and it no longer includes an essay section.

Extracurriculars are also crucial in the admission process. Successful applicants usually have 8-10 total extracurriculars, but being meaningfully involved in a few is more important. They are evaluated on 4 tiers: from the most selective activities showcasing national/international recognition (Tier 1), to general club memberships and volunteering (Tier 4). MIT, in particular, appreciates students displaying passion and excellence (a "spike") in STEM-related activities, due to its nature as a technical institute.

Furthermore, MIT values students who can demonstrate their ability to handle rigorous courses. It's beneficial to focus on challenging STEM courses, such as AP Calculus or Physics. However, AP scores don't heavily influence admissions—it's the grades you earn in these courses that matter, as they display course rigor and an aptitude for the subject matter.

To supplement this, MIT requires an essay and short answers, which give you an opportunity to portray your passion for the field you intend to pursue, your personal qualities, or significant experiences. But keep in mind to avoid cliche topics and make your essays specific and unique.

MIT also requires two letters of recommendation: one from a math or science teacher and one from a humanities, social science, or language teacher. These letters should preferably come from teachers who know you well and can speak to your skills, commitment, and growth in their respective subject.

Lastly, Before applying, it's advised to review MIT's mission and values and consider how you align with the university's commitment to interdisciplinary research, practical problem-solving, and diversity.

Remember, all these factors collectively help paint a holistic picture of your application. Save for meeting the requirements, there's no guaranteed formula for admission—it's good practice to tailor your application to underline your strengths and interests. Good luck with your journey!
