Calculating ACT Composite Scores

Hey there, does anyone understand how the composite score on the ACT is calculated? Does it depend purely on the four main sections (English, Math, Reading, Science), or does the optional writing section influence it as well?

The composite score on the ACT is calculated based on your performance on the four required sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each of these sections are scored on a scale of 1-36, and your composite ACT score is the average of these four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.

As for the optional writing section, it doesn't impact your composite score at all. This section is separately evaluated and scored on a scale of 2-12. So, even if you choose to take the writing section, your score on it doesn't alter or influence your composite ACT score, and colleges that don't require the writing section likely won't pay very much attention to your writing score.

Make sure to focus on each of the four main sections equally because each one contributes equally to your composite score. For instance, aiming to improve in your weaker sections can really boost your composite score. Also, consider doing full practice exams, as they can help you figure out your strengths and weaknesses and gauge how changes in one section may influence your composite score.
