ACT Writing Scores - Do they matter?

I recently took the ACT with the writing section. I haven't received my scores yet, but I'm a bit nervous about how I did on the writing portion. Do colleges place a significant emphasis on ACT writing scores?

While the writing section of the ACT can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of your skills, it's not typically a make-or-break factor in college admissions. In fact, most colleges do not place a significant emphasis on ACT writing scores. Schools are far more interested in your composite ACT score and your individual section scores in English, Math, Reading, and Science as these areas provide a more accurate representation of your academic abilities.

Moreover, many schools have de-emphasized the role of standardized test writing sections in recent years. Some schools have gone as far as making the writing sections optional, and others don't consider them at all. Therefore, while it's always optimal to perform well in every section, your ACT writing score is unlikely to heavily influence admission decisions.

That said, it might be beneficial to check the specific admissions requirements of the colleges you're interested in. Some colleges and specific programs might use ACT writing scores for course placements once admitted. Demonstrating strong writing skills could benefit you in that regard.

Keep focusing on the big picture! Good grades, challenging courses, and impactful extracurricular activities often hold more weight than one individual test score. And your essays for the college application itself often provide a much better gauge of your writing abilities to the admissions team. Make sure your application as a whole showcases your capabilities and potential.
