Given that the University of Michigan uses the Common Application, Naviance, and the Coalition Application, you might be familiar with the general application process. Start off by thoroughly researching the university and the specific program that you are interested in. Understanding the university's culture and values will allow you to tailor your application to better suit their expectations.

The university places a lot of importance on its supplemental essays, more so because it's a school that's test-optional as of the 2024-25 application cycle. You will typically be required to answer two prompts: the "community" essay and the "why major" essay. In the community essay, focus on a community that has shaped your identity and how you have contributed to it. In the "why major" essay, showcase your passion for your intended major, being sure to highlight any relevant experiences or activities, and tie it back to how University of Michigan's specific program can help you reach your academic and career goals.

Extracurricular activities play a big role in the application process too. UMich values applicants who have shown a high level of involvement and leadership in their activities. The most valued activities fall into Tier 1 and Tier 2 of the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars such as exceptional leadership roles or exceptional awards at state or national level. However, that doesn't mean lower Tier activities aren't important. The scale of your involvement matters more than the scale of the extracurricular itself.

UMich also considers demonstrated interest, but keep in mind that it's not as heavy a factor as it may be at other schools. To show demonstrated interest, you can attend virtual events or webinars hosted by the university, and then incorporate that into your essays to show you have a genuine interest in UMich.

In terms of academics, course rigor is key. The University of Michigan values students who have challenged themselves with a rigorous course load in high school that's relevant to their intended program of study.

Overall, try not to stress too much! Remember that you are more than just your application, and the process is just a way for UMich to get to know you better. The best way to approach it is being authentic and thoughtful in your responses. Good luck!
