Need a List of Subjects for High School

Freshman here, trying to plan out my next few years. What subjects should I expect to study in high school, or is there a list of required/core subjects? Any advice would be a lifesaver!

The typical high school curriculum includes a blend of core subjects, required by the state, and elective courses, which you can choose based on your interests and career goals. While the exact offerings can vary slightly from school to school, the high school core curriculum usually includes:

1. English Language Arts: You’ll most likely take four years of this subject, studying various genres of literature, grammar, vocabulary, and composition.

2. Mathematics: Depending on your school and state, you'll take between three to four years of math, usually starting with Algebra I and II, Geometry, and possibly pre-calculus or Calculus.

3. Science: Most high schools require at least three years, which often involves courses like Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

4. Social Studies: You'll likely to take at least three years in subjects like US History, World History, and Government/Civics.

5. Physical Education: Depending on your state's requirements, this might be a yearly requirement or only for a couple of years.

6. Foreign Languages: Many high schools require or strongly recommend taking at least two years of the same foreign language.

7. Arts: Most high schools require at least one year of Visual or Performance Arts.

Elective classes can vary by school and can include courses such as Computer Science, Journalism, Home Economics, Psychology, and many options in the arts and foreign languages.

Remember, your high school course selection is important for college admissions, especially at more selective universities. They want to see that you’ve challenged yourself with harder classes, particularly in your areas of interest.

Always seek out opportunities to take on challenging courses like Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) if your high school offers them. These offerings allow you to both delve deeper into subjects you're passionate about and demonstrate your academic readiness for college.

Best of luck with your high school academic endeavors!
