SATs are coming up soon, and while I've been prepping, I want to know where I should aim. What are the average SAT scores for accepted MIT students? Does MIT value the SAT heavily in their admissions process?
MIT has not published its average SAT scores for the class of 2028, but for the class of 2027, the middle 50% score range for the SAT was 1520-1580.
As for how heavily MIT values the SAT in its admissions process, MIT, like many schools, uses the Academic Index which takes into consideration your grades, test scores (if available), and class rank (if available). If your Academic Index is below a certain cutoff, your application might not be considered, but if you meet the cutoff, your application will at least get read. This means that although your SAT score is an important part of your application, it is not the only factor that MIT will consider.
Remember that while test scores are one component of your application, they are only one piece of the puzzle. Schools like MIT will also look at your coursework, grades, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation to get a holistic view of your candidacy.
