Stanford and the Ivy League Confusion

So, I've been looking at Stanford as a potential college choice, but I am a tad confused. Is Stanford an Ivy League school? I assumed it was because it's a reputable institution, but it would be great to get some clarity on this. Any help is much appreciated.

Stanford University, while a world-renowned and highly respected institution, is not part of the Ivy League. The term "Ivy League" refers specifically to a group of eight private universities in the Northeastern United States: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Dartmouth, and Brown.

This group was initially formed as a sports conference, but over time, it has come to represent academic excellence, selectivity in admission, and a tradition of prestigious scholarship. That being said, Stanford shares many characteristics with the Ivy League schools, such as rigorous academics, a strong commitment to research, and a vibrant student community.

So, while Stanford is frequently mentioned in the same breath as the Ivy League due to its quality and prestige, it's technically not an Ivy League institution. Nevertheless, Stanford is considered a top-tier university and is often used as a benchmark alongside the Ivy League when discussing academic excellence.
