Understanding AP Human Geo FRQs

Hey everyone! Reality's hitting me hard - the AP Human Geo test is near. How do I best approach the FRQs? Any tips on how to organize my responses for the best score?

Sure thing! For the AP Human Geography FRQs, there are certain strategies you can follow:

1. Understand the Question: Always read the prompt carefully. Identify the command terms like 'define,' 'identify,' 'describe,' 'explain,' etc. Each of these words is indicating a different level of understanding and will dictate how you approach your answer.

2. Use the ACE strategy: When it comes to FRQs, a popular strategy to use is ACE—Answer, Cite, and Elaborate. In other words, you should clearly answer the question, cite specific evidence (in this case, concepts, theories, or human geography data), and then elaborate on how your evidence supports your answer.

3. Make sure your answer is orderly: Create a mini-outline for your response before you begin writing it. This will help you have a clear, organized thought pattern in your response, and it will make it easier for the AP graders to follow what you're saying.

4. Write Full Sentences: This isn’t the multiple-choice section; no bullet points or fragmented sentences. Make sure your responses are thorough, show off your knowledge, and above all, answer the question(s) in the prompt.

5. Be Specific: The graders want to see that you understand the material, so be specific with your responses. Use relevant terminology and concepts you've learned during the course. Don't be vague.

6. Time Management: Lastly, don’t spend too much time on one FRQ. There are three of them and you have 75 minutes in total, which mean 25 minutes per question. Keep an eye on the clock and stay within that timeframe. This doesn't include reading time, which is separate.

Remember, practice is key. The more FRQs you write, the faster and better you'll get at it. Best of luck for your AP Human Geography exam!
