Nursing Majors - What's Out There?

Hey everyone! I've been thinking quite a bit about pursuing nursing in college, but I'm not exactly sure what types of nursing majors exist. I am interested in specializing, but don't know what options are available? Also, how would I figure out which schools offer the major I want? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In terms of nursing majors, there are several options available, and these often depend on the kind of role and environment you envision for yourself in the healthcare field. Here are a few examples you could consider:

1. Registered Nurse (RN): This is a general nursing option where you'll likely earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). With this major, you'll be providing care to patients, coordinating care plans, educating the public, and providing emotional support to patients and families.

2. Nurse Practitioner (NP): In this specialization, which usually requires advanced education such as a Master’s degree, you can work more independently than RNs and can diagnose conditions, analyze tests, and prescribe medication.

3. Pediatric Nurse: If you enjoy working with children, you could specialize in pediatric nursing where you'll provide care for infants, children, and adolescents.

4. Neonatal Nurse: This specialization involves intensive care for newborn babies with health issues.

5. Geriatric Nurse: If you're interested in caring for elderly patients, a specialization in geriatric nursing could be right for you.

6. Psychiatric Nurse: You could also focus on mental health and work as a psychiatric nurse, providing care for patients who suffer from mental illness.

7. Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM): A specialization that includes caring for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

To find out what specific programs and majors each school offers, your best bet would be to do a bit of research on the nursing programs at various universities. Go to their official websites and take a close look at their course catalogs — in there, you'll see a list of the specific nursing specialties or tracks that each program offers.

As a rule of thumb, remember to consider the type of patients you're drawn to help, the environments you feel comfortable in, and the length of education you are willing to pursue when you're choosing a nursing specialty. Good luck on your journey towards a rewarding career in nursing!
