Hey, I'm prepping for my ACT and I'd hate to get disqualified because of something silly like bringing the wrong calculator. Does anyone know which calculators are prohibited on the ACT?
Hey there! Here's some information on the ACT calculator policy. The ACT allows students to use any four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator, as long as it's not part of a banned category.
Prohibited calculators generally fall into a few categories:
1. Calculators with Computer Algebra System (CAS) functionality: These are usually calculators that can do symbolic algebra or symbolic calculus, or those that can do the same in other nonnumeric calculations.
2. Calculators with QWERTY (i.e., typewriter-like) keypads as part of hardware or software are not allowed.
3. Additionally, you cannot use calculators that use paper tape, make noise, can connect to the internet, or have a wireless or Bluetooth capability, unless these features are turned off.
Some common calculators NOT allowed are the TI-89 and TI-92, since they have CAS capabilities. TI-Nspire CAS is also not allowed but the non-CAS TI-Nspire is okay. Most calculators in the TI-83 and TI-84 series are permitted.
Despite the list of prohibitions, don't stress too much about the calculator! It’s a tool to help you, but your understanding of the concepts being tested is what will truly make the difference. Good luck on your prep!
