ACT vs SAT - Which Is Tougher?

Hey guys, I have two questions. Is the ACT generally considered harder than the SAT? And does one hold more weight than the other in college admissions?

Hi there! Let's take a closer look at both of these exams. Fundamentally, it's not about the ACT being harder than the SAT, or vice versa. The two tests are structured differently and may cater more to different kinds of test-takers.

The ACT has sections for English, Math, Reading, and Science, with an optional Writing test. It's generally known for its fast pace and focus on a wider content base, especially in the Math section, which extends to Pre-Calculus. The ACT Science section doesn't actually require specific scientific knowledge, focusing more on data interpretation and graphs.

On the other hand, the SAT has sections for Reading, Writing and Language, and Math, with an optional essay. The math section on the SAT is split into two parts - one where use of calculator is allowed, and one where it is not. Since spring of 2024, with its shift to the digital version, the SAT allows the use of a calculator in both Math sections. The SAT focuses more on problem-solving and analytical skills, and its Math section covers less advanced topics than the ACT does.

Now for the second part of your question - whether colleges favor one test over the other. The answer is no. Universities in the U.S. equally accept and consider both exams. They do not prefer one over the other. Choose the one that suits your strengths more - if you're better at problem-solving and have solid mathematical grounding, the SAT might be a better option. But if you find yourself better at rapid information processing or if your strength lies in scientific interpretation, the ACT might be a better shot. Consider taking a practice test for both to see which one you perform better on.
