Studying AP Chemistry Free Response Questions

Hello fellow study bugs, I'm currently preparing for my AP Chemistry exam and the Free Response Questions are giving me a hard time. I think I understand the material, but when I sit down to answer these FRQs I get stumped. Any tips or strategies you've found useful? Peace out.

Hey there! I totally understand where you're coming from, FRQs can seem a bit intimidating at first. However, there's definitely ways to tackle them more effectively!

First off, it always helps to thoroughly read the problem. And, I mean "thoroughly"! You might get some hints about how to approach the question embedded in the prompt itself. Besides, you want to make sure you understand what the question is asking for.

Next, recall the related concepts. Test makers design FRQs to assess your deep understanding of a significant portion of the course material, so try to connect the problem to the broader concepts you've learned in class. Don't just zero in on the specifics—consider how the specific issue or problem presented links back to those major principles.

Before diving straight into the calculation or analysis, jot down a short plan of how you're going to approach the question. This will help streamline your thought process and it will prevent you from going off on tangents.

Remember to show all of your work, explain your reasoning and be clear about your assumptions (if any). A major chunk of your FRQ score is graded on how you arrived at your answer, not just the answer itself.

Finally, practice makes perfect. Use the AP Chemistry FRQs from previous years to see what you’re up against. You can find these on the CollegeBoard website. It will shape your understanding of how the questions are laid out and what exactly is demanded from you.

Good luck with your studying!
