Types of science classes for college prep?

Hi everyone! I am currently scheduling my classes for next year and I want to make sure I take some rigorous classes to show colleges I'm serious about STEM. In your experience, what types of science classes (like AP, IB, etc.) worked best for your pre-college preparation?

I think your interest in challenging yourself with rigorous courses is commendable. Since you're aiming to demonstrate an interest in STEM, it would definitely be beneficial to push yourself to take the most advanced science and math courses available at your high school. This effectively communicates your STEM focus to colleges.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses, in my opinion, are a fantastic resource. AP courses including AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics (1, 2, or C – depending on your physics background), and AP Environmental Science are all great options. However, not all schools offer these courses, so you'll need to see what's accessible at your school.

International Baccalaureate (IB) science courses also hold high regard amongst colleges. Higher Level (HL) science subjects demonstrate a strong commitment to these fields. If your school offers the IB program, this could be a potential path for you.

Dual-enrollment is another interesting avenue to explore. This typically involves taking courses at a local community college while still in high school, which can provide exposure to collegiate-level coursework and can demonstrate initiative and intellectual curiosity.

One important thing to remember, however, is not to overload yourself in the pursuit of rigorous courses. The intention of these advanced classes is not only to demonstrate your intellectual drive but also to explore areas of potential interest more deeply. So, make sure you pick the classes you genuinely find interesting.

Lastly, independent study, summer programs, or research internships could further enhance your profile by demonstrating a deeper interest and commitment to the field. These experiences often provide unique opportunities to explore the subjects you're intrigued by outside of a strictly academic context.

The bottom line is to seek for a balanced yet challenging curriculum that aligns with your interests and future goals. Good luck with your course selection!
