Deciding Between AB and BC Calculus

Hey guys, I'm planning my schedule for senior year and I'm not sure whether I should take AB or BC Calculus. Can anyone explain the difference and which one would look better for college apps? My goal is to get into STEM, should that influence my decision?

Indeed, your goal of getting into a STEM field can definitely influence your decision on whether to take AB or BC Calculus.

To break it down, AB Calculus generally covers what's equivalent to a college's one semester Calculus course. It moves at a more manageable pace and provides an extensive understanding of limits, differentiation, and basic integral calculus. This would be a solid choice if you have a weaker math background or if you feel like you would be overwhelmed by the fast pace of BC Calculus.

On the other hand, BC Calculus covers the same material as AB Calculus, plus additional topics including more advanced integration techniques, polar coordinates, Taylor series, and sequences and series. It's typically representative of a full-year of college calculus. If you're aiming for a degree in STEM, schools may see BC Calculus as a more compelling sign of your readiness for college-level math and your commitment to your field.

However, your performance matters too. It's better to get a high grade in AB calculus and understand it well, than to struggle or do poorly in BC. Remember that colleges look at both the rigor of your coursework and your grades, so it's a balance.

I hope this information helps guide your decision! Consider your comfort level with math, your long term goals, and how either course fits into your overall academic workload and plan. Good luck!
