Hey fellow applicants! I'm prepping for the PSAT and wanted to ask – what is an average score on the test? I’m trying to set some goals for myself, so I’d love some insight into what scores are considered okay, good, or even great. Thanks, everyone!
Hello!
The PSAT is scored on a scale of 320 to 1520. The test contains two sections — Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing — each scored on a scale of 160 to 760.
Here's a general understanding of how scores break down:
- Average PSAT scores usually hover around 920-930 (460-470 in both sections). This is right in the middle of the scoring range and typically represents an average performance.
- Scores above 1000 – 1010 (500 – 505 in each section) are generally considered good. They indicate that you're performing above average compared to other students in your grade.
- Finally, a score of 1200 and above is often considered great, as it puts you in the top 25% of test-takers.
Remember, the PSAT is a preliminary test for the SAT, so use it as an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the SAT's format and question types. Also, keep in mind that even though the PSAT and SAT are very similar tests, the conversion of scores between them is not a 1-to-1 ratio – an 1150 on the PSAT, for example, translates to about an 1180 on the SAT.
Good luck with your preparation!
