What's the GPA needed to have a good shot at Duke?

Hey guys, I'm doing pretty well in my classes but I've been eyeballing Duke University as a potential place to apply. Does anyone know what the usual GPA range is for accepted students there? Thanks in advance!

Duke University is one of the top universities in the nation and as such, they prefer to see very high academic achievement from their applicants. The 25th percentile GPA for Duke is roughly about 3.8, and the 75th percentile is around a 4.0 on a weighted scale.

This means if you have a weighted GPA above 4.0, you're really in the zone that Duke is looking for. Keep in mind, though, these are not strict cutoffs. If your GPA is slightly lower, strong performance in other areas (like SAT/ACT scores, extracurricular activities or a stellar essay) can certainly help bolster your application.

However, Duke's admissions process is holistic and competitive, meaning that they won't look at your GPA in isolation. They are also interested in how challenging your course load has been. Taking rigorous courses like AP or IB classes and performing well in them shows you are ready for the challenge that Duke's coursework will present.

Moreover, GPA is just one part of your profile. Don't underestimate the power of a strong essay, compelling letters of recommendation, and unique, impactful extracurricular activities. Again, they are looking at you as a whole individual, so other aspects of your application can make a significant impact.

Hope this helps, and best of luck with your applications!
