SAT vs PSAT - What are the differences?

Hello! I took the PSAT earlier this school year, and I'm trying to figure out the differences between it and the actual SAT. Are they really similar or should I expect significant changes? Any insight would be awesome, thank you!

Hello! Good question. As of spring 2024, the structure of both the PSAT and the SAT is very similar since both became digital tests.

For both the SAT and the PSAT, there are two sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. The Reading and Writing section consists of two 32-minute modules, with a total of 54 questions, which gives you approximately 71 seconds per question.

The Math section consists of two 35-minute modules, with 44 questions total. This allows about a minute and a half, or 96 seconds, for each question.

For both tests, the total duration is 134 minutes to complete 98 questions. So, the digital PSAT is now the same length as the digital SAT.

An important point to remember is that there are no longer 'no calculator' sections on both tests – you can use your calculator on both Math modules.

However, the biggest difference between the two is in the scoring scale and the stakes of each exam. The PSAT is scored out of 1520, while the SAT is scored out of 1600. Additionally, the PSAT is primarily a practice test for the SAT, although it can qualify you for National Merit Scholarships.

On the other hand, the SAT is considered in college admissions decisions and can significantly impact your chances of acceptance at various universities.

In terms of the content tested, both exams will cover much of the same material. The SAT may delve a bit deeper into some topics, but if you've prepared for and taken the PSAT, you've got a good basis for starting your SAT study.

I hope this helps! Good luck with your SAT preparation!
