Admission process for Harvard?

Hi Everyone! Is there anyone who can guide me on how to get into Harvard? I'd love to know what kind of grades, extracurriculars, essays, and recommendations they're looking for. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated!

Answer: Of course, happy to help! Getting into Harvard is a competitive process, but by understanding what they're looking for, you could increase your chances.

Grades and Test Scores:

Over 90% of admitted students at Harvard are in the top 10% of their graduating high school class, and the average admitted student has a 5.2 weighted GPA. The mean SAT score falls in between 1500-1580 and ACT composite score is 4-36. As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, Harvard has reinstated the requirement for SAT or ACT scores.

Extracurriculars:

Harvard values unique and impactful extracurricular involvements. They want to see that you have developed an interest or expertise deeply, or what's often called a "spike." It's more about the quality of your extracurriculars, showing significant commitment and achievement, rather than simply just a higher quantity.

Essays:

In your essays, Harvard wants to see authentic stories that highlight your personality, values, and how you uniquely experience and see the world. The most compelling essays typically avoid cliche topics and instead explore facets of your identity, experiences, or interests that offer Harvard new perspectives.

Recommendation Letters:

Ask teachers who know you well and can provide detailed examples of your demonstrated intellectual curiosity, ability to overcome obstacles, commitment to community, etc. If possible, select teachers in subjects related to your intended major or academic interests. Note that Harvard requires two letters from teachers and one from your school counselor.

Remember, applying Early Action may improve your chances, but Harvard recruits a diverse class, from around the world with different backgrounds and experiences, so there isn't a set-in-stone "type" of student that always gains admission to Harvard.

Finally, I would suggest that you also consider your overall "fit" for Harvard. This includes its academic programs related to your interests, the community, campus environment, among other things. This would not just improve your application's chances but also ensure that you'll thrive there.
