What's the acceptance rate at UConn like? Wondering about my chances

Guys, I'm a junior really interested in UConn and I wanted to get some insight. Do you guys have any idea about the acceptance rate, and what are they really looking for in their incoming class? Any tips on how to potentially increase my chances? Thanks in advance!

As of the most recent data available, the acceptance rate at the University of Connecticut (UConn) is around 55%. That means nearly half of applicants get accepted, but keep in mind this varies by major and campus.

UConn places significant importance on academic performance. As such, strong grades in challenging courses (like APs or Honors) and solid standardized test scores (although UConn is currently test-optional due to COVID-19) are important for a competitive application. The middle 50% SAT range for accepted students was 1220-1400, and the middle 50% ACT range was 28-33, before the test-optional policy was implemented.

In terms of what they’re looking for in their incoming class, generally, colleges like UConn are interested in students who display academic rigor, involvement in extracurriculars, and demonstrate personal growth and character. Remember, quality trumps quantity when it comes to activities. Admissions officers rather see you deeply invested in a few activities than spreading yourself thin across many. Ideally, you should aim for a mix of extracurriculars, including some in the top two tiers of the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars.

Your written application, including your essays, are another key factor. They're the part of your application where you really get to speak in your own voice. Staying away from cliché topics and instead delving into singular experiences or moments of conflict can make your essay stand out.

Lastly, demonstrating interest could give you a slight edge. This can be anything from attending virtual information sessions or webinars hosted by UConn to reaching out to the admissions office with thoughtful questions about their programs. Make sure to document your interactions for reference in your supplemental essays or interviews.

Here's a tip: If UConn is your first choice, consider applying Early Action. This can give you a slight bump in your acceptance chances, and you’re not bound to attend if accepted.

Good luck with your application process!
