What are the University of Michigan's requirements for admission?

Stressed junior here! Does anyone know the admission requirements for the University of Michigan? I've got a list of prospective dream schools and I'm just trying to make sure I'm hitting the right targets for each. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Admission to the University of Michigan is characteristically competitive, which means you'll want to focus on meeting and surpassing their stated admission requirements.

For the fall of 2024-2025, the University of Michigan will still be using a test-optional policy, meaning you may choose to report your SAT or ACT scores, but they are not required. If you are interested in STEM programs such as engineering which involve a fair amount of quantitative reasoning, strong standardized test scores can certainly aid your application.

Michigan considers both your weighted and unweighted GPA for admission. Try to maintain a high GPA (a 3.85 is the average) and take rigorous courses (like APs, IBs, or honors) to demonstrate your academic prowess.

Your extracurricular activities should ideally showcase your passion, leadership, and commitment. Following the 4-Tiers of Extracurriculars, aim for some activities in the top two tiers that demonstrate achievement or leadership at the state, national, or international level.

Uni of Michigan requires one recommendation letter from a teacher and another from a counselor. Bear in mind that these letters should capture your skills and character from people who know you well, so consider asking mentors who have seen your growth and potential.

As for essays, the University of Michigan requires two supplemental essays. One is about the specific college you're applying to, and another is about community. Make sure your essays reveal your personality, values, and why you are a good fit for Michigan.

Lastly, it's worth noting that the University of Michigan does consider demonstrated interest in the application process. This means the admissions committee takes note of applicants who show authentic interest in the school, by means of attending Michigan's virtual and in-person events, or engaging with the admissions office directly.
