Is SAT a requirement for University of Virginia?

Hello everyone! I was just wondering if UVA requires the SAT for their admissions or if they've gone test optional. If SAT is required, then what's a good score to aim for? Thanks!

Yes, as of the 2024-2025 application cycle, the University of Virginia (UVA) requires an SAT or ACT score from all applicants. They reverted this policy after a period of being temporarily test-optional due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In terms of what score range to aim for, you should look at the middle 50% SAT scores for accepted students. UVA's middle 50% range for the SAT is typically around 1400-1520. This means that 50% of admitted students scored within this range on the SAT. Particularly if UVA is a target or reach school for you, you should aim for the upper end of this range or higher to maximize your chances of admission.

Even if your scores fall on the lower end of this range (or lower than this range), remember that the admissions process is holistic. This means that your essays, letters of recommendation, high school course rigor, and involvement in extracurricular activities are all well-considered, in addition to test scores and GPA.

On that note, I do want to stress the importance of grades in particular. UVA, like many other selective schools, evaluates applicants using an Academic Index, which considers the strength of your grades and test scores. Even if your test score is at an acceptable level, it's essential that you also have strong grades and a rigorous course load to show that you can handle the academic challenges of UVA.

Wishing you the best of luck with your application to UVA!
