US Air Force Academy Requirements?

Hello everyone! I'm planning on applying to the US Air Force Academy and was wondering if anyone could give me some information on what the admissions requirements are like? I want to be prepared and make sure I meet all expectations. Thanks in advance.

Applying to the United States Air Force Academy is quite a thorough process, so it's good you're thinking ahead! Here are the key steps and requirements:

1. Eligibility Parameters: You must be at least 17 but not past your 23rd birthday by July 1 of the year you enter. You must also be a U.S. citizen (exceptions are made for international students from particular countries), and cannot be married, pregnant, or have dependent obligations.

2. Academics: High academic achievement is expected. While there is no minimum GPA or test score, many successful applicants are near the top of their class, have taken AP or IB courses, and have strong SAT or ACT scores. As of 2024-2025, both the SAT and ACT are accepted. While there are no strict cutoff scores, the United States Air Force Academy states on their admissions website that applicants who score a 620 or below on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and a 580 or below on the SAT Math will not normally be competitive for an appointment directly into the Academy. For applicants who took the ACT, the same applies for those who scored a 24 or below on English/Reading and 25 or below on Math/Science.

3. Fitness Assessment: All applicants will need to take the Candidate Fitness Assessment, which includes events such as a kneeling basketball throw, push-ups, pull-ups, a 600 yard run and a 1.5 mile run. It's advised for applicants to start training well in advance.

4. Medical exam: You also will undergo a thorough medical evaluation. Because the Academy prepares students for military service, there are strict medical and physical standards.

5. Nomination: Perhaps the most unique requirement is that you must secure a nomination, most commonly from a U.S. Senator or Representative or the Vice President.

6. Extracurriculars: Lastly, being well-rounded and showing leadership through extracurricular activities is important since the Academy is looking for future leaders. Any activities where you held a leadership position will be viewed favorably.

This overview should give you a good start on what’s necessary for applications. Remember that applying to the Air Force Academy is a commitment to serve as a commissioned officer in the Air Force, so make sure you are prepared for that commitment. Best of luck!
