Is a 1420 SAT Score Good Enough?

Just got my SAT scores back and not sure how to feel about my 1420. Is that considered a good score for getting into competitive universities? Any suggestion if I should retake it or focus on my application's other aspects?

A 1420 SAT score is a strong score, placing you in approximately the 96th percentile of all test-takers. This means that you scored higher than 96% of everyone who took the SAT. Without question, this is a competitive score that should open many doors for you in terms of university admission.

However, when considering whether it's "good enough," it really boils down to the specific institutions you're planning on applying to. For example, if you're aiming for Ivy League or other highly selective schools, most of these institutions have middle 50% SAT score ranges that exceed 1420. However, if you are targeting less selective or mid-tier schools, a 1420 would be an excellent score.

Taking the test again might be an option to consider if you're aiming for the most competitive schools and believe you can significantly improve. On the other hand, bear in mind that this will require further time and commitment that might detract from other aspects of your application, such as maintaining a high GPA, leading in extracurriculars, or crafting compelling essays. Since these universities have holistic admissions processes, SAT scores are just one component of your application.

Essentially, it's a balancing act and it's crucial to ensure you're well-rounded in all elements of your application. Prioritize areas you feel could add the most value to your application and improve your admissions odds.

Also, starting from the 2024-2025 application cycle, a few notable schools, including Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth, will require all applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score, while others, like Columbia, Princeton, Stanford, and UPenn, remain test-optional. Be sure to check the current admissions standards of the colleges on your list.

All the best with your college application process!
