How to choose schools with a good Criminal Justice program?

Hey y'all! I'm a junior in high school and I'm super interested in the field of Criminal Justice. I've been searching for schools that have solid programs for this but it's kinda overwhelming. Could any of you share some tips or pointers on how to narrow down my choices? Maybe things I should consider to determine if a program is good or not. Thanks a lot!

Hello! It sounds like you're on the right track in taking the time to evaluate the different criminal justice programs available. Here are a few areas you could focus on to help refine your search:

1. Curriculum: Take a look at the course offerings at each university. What sort of classes are offered within the criminal justice major? A diverse, comprehensive curriculum is a good sign. A strong program would offer not just theoretical classes, but also practical training and an overview of various aspects of the field like criminology, law enforcement, corrections, and forensics.

2. Internship Opportunities: Practical experience is a key component of criminal justice education. Check if the college has partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, government organizations or law firms for internships. This will provide hands-on experience and could potentially open doors for future job opportunities.

3. Faculty and Staff: Faculty members who are experienced, respected in the field, or are actively involved in research can greatly enhance your learning. Some universities list faculty and their credentials or research interests on the program webpage, so be sure to check it out.

4. Graduate Success: What have graduates of the program gone on to do? If a significant percentage of graduates go on to roles in law enforcement, public policy, law school, or other relevant fields, it's a good indication that the program adequately prepares its students for careers in criminal justice.

5. Accreditation: Ensure that the schools you're considering are regionally accredited, and check if the criminal justice program itself has any special accreditations. This ensures you're getting a degree that's recognized and respected in the industry.

6. Availability of Minors or Double Military: If you have specific interests within criminal justice like cybersecurity, psychology, or public policy, check if the university offers minors or double majors that can complement your main program.

Remember, it's not just about the overall university’s reputation, but the strength and focus of their criminal justice department. Take the time to reach out to colleges/universities to ask specific questions if you're unable to find the information on their website. Connecting with current students or alumni can also be informative. Happy Hunting!
