Exploring Calculus AB

Hello folks, I'm planning on taking Calculus next year and heard about this 'Calculus AB' thing. What exactly is it? Is it the same as taking regular Calculus but at an advanced level, or is it something different? Is it beneficial for college apps if I take it, especially if I'm focusing on STEM? Would love to hear experiences or insights.

Calculus AB is an Advanced Placement (AP) course. Advanced Placement courses are college-level courses taught in high school, and successful completion (usually defined as scoring a 3, 4, or 5 on the exam) can get you college credit or allow you to skip introductory courses in college.

The AP Calculus curriculum is divided into two separate courses and exams: Calculus AB and Calculus BC. Calculus AB covers the first semester of college calculus, while BC covers the first two semesters. So, the content you would cover in Calculus AB roughly equates to a semester-long college course in introductory calculus.

As for your question regarding the benefit of taking it, the short answer is yes. Calculus AB can be particularly advantageous if you're planning a major in STEM since these areas usually require at least some calculus. It provides a strong foundation for any STEM-related field and demonstrates to admission officers your willingness to undertake rigorous courses. Plus, doing well in the class and on the AP exam can earn you college credits, which may help you get a head start on your degree.

One thing I'd encourage you to do is to check out the course description on the College Board website. They provide a detailed breakdown of what the course covers and sample exam questions which can give you a solid understanding of what you'd be getting into.

Remember, the goal is not just to load up on rigorous courses for the sake of looking impressive - make sure they align with your interests and career goals, and that you balance your schedule to avoid burnout. Best of luck with your decision!
