I'm starting to prep for my SATs and wanna have a solid study plan. Can somebody give me an overview of what the SAT exam sections are? I know there's Math and Reading/Writing but I’m not exactly sure what they consist of or cover.
As of Spring 2024, the SAT has gone completely digital. It’s made up of two main sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math.
For the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section, it's divided into two 32-minute modules. In these modules, there will be a total of 54 questions that you'll need to answer within this time. The questions will primarily focus on comprehension and interpretation of texts that you'll be provided. These texts can range from classic literature passages, to scientific reports, or historical documents. You'll be assessed on your understanding of these texts, your ability to identify central ideas and themes, and your capability to use evidence within the text to make your points.
The Math section, much like the Reading/Writing section, is also divided into two 35-minute modules. Here, you'll have to answer 44 questions. Unlike in previous years, the SAT now allows the use of calculators in both math modules. The Math section includes questions based on algebra, problem-solving, data analysis and some aspects of trigonometry and complex equations.
In total, the SAT is 134 minutes long, and consists of 98 questions. Keep in mind that the SAT doesn't have penalties for wrong answers, so it's always good to take your best guess rather than leaving a blank if you're uncertain.
If you want to get a feel for the actual exam, consider using the Bluebook™ app. This gives you the opportunity to take a full-length practice test, which can be a good way to familiarize yourself with the format and get some useful practice.
Remember that creating a study plan that fits your needs is crucial. Identify your strengths and weaknesses, aim to dedicate certain blocks of time to different section content, and most importantly, practice consistently. Good luck!
