How hard is it to get into Virginia Military Institute?

I am thinking about pursuing military after high school and Virginia Military Institute came up as a solid option. Curious about how hard it is to get in there? What's their acceptance rate and what do they typically look for in applicants?

Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is considered to be moderately selective, with an acceptance rate hovering around 82% recently. However, acceptance rates can fluctuate from year to year, and it's worth noting that getting accepted is only part of the equation. VMI, as with other military schools, has a demanding lifestyle and rigorous academic program that not every student may be prepared for or interested in.

VMI seeks applicants who express strong interest in a military-style education. They value qualities such as leadership, discipline, commitment, and physical fitness. Hence, while academic performance and standardized test scores are important, they also look at things like participation in organized sports, leadership roles in clubs or organizations, community service, and JROTC participation if available.

From an academic perspective, most admitted students tend to have averages in the "B" range, SAT scores between 1050-1260, or ACT scores between 22-28. They also require a health examination, indicating they take into account physical readiness for the military environment.

Remember, these numbers are just averages, not hard cut-offs. If you fall a bit below the average but have a strong dedication to joining a military-style institute and can show initiative, leadership, or related experiences, VMI might see the potential in you. Just as well, scoring above these averages does not guarantee admission. Your entire application, including your personal statement and extracurriculars, will play a substantial role in your admission decision.
