I'm looking to better prepare for the English section of the ACT. Has anyone who has taken the ACT before noticed whether its more about grammar, punctuation, syntax, or something else? What are the common rules that come up?
The English section on the ACT primarily consists of five types of questions: punctuation, grammar and usage, sentence structure, strategy, and organization/style.
For punctuation, you need to know proper usage of commas, semi-colons, colons, apostrophes, and dashes.
With grammar and usage, the ACT generally tests you on verb tense, pronoun errors, subject-verb agreement, possessive pronouns, and comparative and superlative adjectives/adverbs.
Sentence structure questions test your knowledge on subordination and coordination, misplaced modifiers, and idioms.
Strategy questions are related to deciding whether or not to add or delete information in a sentence based on the overall context.
Finally, organization/style questions consist of making decisions about where to add or delete information in an entire passage based on overall writing style or tone.
While all these aspects are tested, generally speaking, the bulk of the questions you’ll see falls under punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure.
You can prepare better by taking practice tests and specifically focusing on these areas when studying. It's also a good idea to review fundamental grammar rules and conventions to ensure you cover all bases. Good luck with your preparations!
