What are the requirements for admission to Florida State University?

Hey guys! Rising senior here. I'm super interested in Florida State University, but I'm a little unclear on what they look for in student applications. Can anyone shed some light on the exact prerequisites? Like, do they require certain classes, GPAs, extracurriculars, leadership roles, or something else entirely? I want to be well-prepared when I apply next fall. Thanks for the help!

Florida State University (FSU) doesn't have exact prerequisites or cut-off stats, but they review applicants in a comprehensive manner, considering high school records, SAT/ACT scores (if you choose to submit them), extracurricular activities, and the essay. As part of the holistic review, they'll also factor in the rigor of your curriculum and improvements in your academic performance over time.

For your high school curriculum, you need to have at least four years of English, four years of math (Algebra I level and above), three years of science (two must have lab components), three years of social science, and two years of the same foreign language. An additional year of coursework in math, science, or foreign language is strongly recommended.

As for GPA, FSU typically seeks students who're at the top of their class. The average weighted GPA of admitted students is often around 4.0 - 4.5.

Submitting SAT/ACT scores is optional due to test-optional policies in response to COVID-19 test cancellations. However, traditionally, the range of scores for admitted students often falls within these boundaries: SAT (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math) 1390 - 1450, ACT Composite 26 - 31.

Extracurricular involvement and leadership are very important. Admissions officers generally look for deep involvement in a few areas rather than a shallow involvement in many areas (quality over quantity!). Try to aim for extracurriculars that tier 1 and 2, such as regional or national competitions or recognitions.

Lastly, they'll evaluate your essay for evidence of maturity, motivation, and potential to succeed in and contribute to their campus community.

It's worth mentioning that requirements may vary for specific programs like the Honors Program, or if you're a Transfer or International student. Always check the specific requirements for your situation on the FSU website or consult with the Admissions Office. Good luck with your application!
