Need insight on typical unweighted GPAs

Good day, folks! I'm working to better my grades and hit the ground running, but I don't know what a good unweighted GPA benchmark is. Could any of you lovely people fill me in on what the 'average' unweighted GPA is? Also, I’d love to know how some of you worked on maintaining/improving your GPA. Thanks y'all!

Hello! It's awesome that you're thinking about your GPA! Unweighted GPAs are on a scale of 0.0 to 4.0, with 4.0 being the highest grade point average (A+ in all classes). For high-achieving students aiming at selective colleges, a 3.7+ unweighted GPA is often seen as competitive.

The 'average' GPA can actually vary significantly depending on context, though. According to a study conducted by the National Center for Educational Statistics on public high schools, the average high school GPA is typically around a 3.0, which equates to a 'B' grade. But more competitive schools usually have a much higher average GPA, as noted above.

Boosting your GPA relies largely on consistent efforts. Here are a few tips:

1. Prioritize: Identify the subjects or classes where you're struggling and allocate more time and effort into those areas.

2. Seek Help: Don’t hesitate to ask for help! It could be your teacher, a classmate who’s doing well, or you could even consider tutoring.

3. Organize: Stay organized with your assignments and manage your time wisely. This way you avoid last-minute cramming, which can lead to errors and stress.

4. The "Extra Mile": Going the extra mile can also pay off. Teachers often appreciate it when they see students making an additional effort. That additional reading or extra-credit assignment can occasionally be the difference between two grades.
