How to approach the national merit application process?

Hi, I'm potentially in the running for the National Merit based on my PSAT scores. What's the process for applying for the National Merit Scholarship? Are there any tips on how to stand out from other applicants? I'm a bit stressed about getting everything right.

Congrats on your high PSAT score and potential for running for National Merit Scholarship! The National Merit Scholarship application process usually begins in the fall of your junior year when you take the PSAT/NMSQT.

First thing to keep in mind is the selection index. Each state has a different cutoff score for the PSAT/NMSQT that is considered in terms of qualifying for this scholarship. So make sure you check and meet the qualifying score for your state.

Once you qualify, you'll be notified by your school or the National Merit Corporation at the beginning of your senior year that you're a semifinalist. You then need to complete an application that includes details about your academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership positions, and honors received, among other details. You'll also need to write an essay.

Speaking of the essay, it's your chance to allow the selection committee to get to know you better. Avoid conventionally cliche topics and try to share an aspect of your life or challenge that is unique and personal to you, demonstrating your growth, resilience, or commitment.

Ensure your academic record stays strong throughout high school, as they'll look at your consistency in performing highly in rigorous courses. The same goes for your extracurriculars — depth is preferred over breadth. Having deep involvement in a few activities where you've demonstrated leadership and impact helps to distinguish you from your peers. Try to aim for Tier 1 or Tier 2 activities that highlight your achievements at a high level.

Lastly, you'll need a recommendation from your school, typically the principal or guidance counselor. As such, it may be beneficial to cultivate relationships with these figures who can speak to your character and accomplishments.

Remember that it's an honorable achievement to even qualify as a semifinalist! Best of luck and remember that there are tons of scholarships out there, so don't stress too much about this one.
