What's the deal with NC State application requirements?

Hey everyone, the college application process is a whirlwind and I'm trying to make sense of it all. Does anyone specifically know about North Carolina State University and what they’re looking for in their applications? What are some of the key elements they consider? Is my GPA, extracurriculars or something else more important? Thanks for the help!

When looking at NC State's application requirements, there are several elements they consider when reviewing applicants.

Firstly, regarding your GPA, they do focus on your academic performance. They're interested in seeing a consistently high level of academic achievement, illustrated by your GPA, throughout your high school career. A low GPA may be a red flag, so an upward trend where grades improve over the years can help balance out a lower average.

As it comes to standardized testing requirements, for the 2024-2025 application cycle, NC State is test-optional for students with a GPA of 2.8 or above. That means you are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores if your GPA is above this threshold, but you can certainly do so if you think they will add to your application and highlight your academic abilities. Below this threshold, you will be required to submit standardized test scores.

Regarding your course load, NC State prefers to see that you have taken a rigorous curriculum throughout high school by choosing AP, IB, or other honors-level courses. It showcases your ability to handle more challenging coursework, similar to what you might encounter in college.

Extracurricular-wise, NC State, like many other colleges, values students who have demonstrated commitment and leadership in a few activities, over just participating in many. For instance, if you have spent several years advancing through the ranks of a club or team and held a leadership role, it's much more impactful than simply being a member of many clubs but not having a significant role or contribution in them.

In their review process, they also appreciate seeing well-written application essays, insightful recommendations from your teachers and counselors, a demonstration of your intellectual curiosity, and your potential to contribute to their campus community. On the whole, they adopt a holistic approach to application review, considering several aspects of your application to gain a comprehensive understanding of who you are as a student and an individual.

Remember to check their application guidelines for more specific instructions. Good luck with your application!
