Dartmouth Acceptance, What Does it Take?

Hello community! Dartmouth is one of my dream schools and I'm kind of stressing about getting in. What sort of stats, extracurriculars, and experiences are they typically looking for in a student? What steps can I take to increase my chances at Dartmouth?

Dartmouth is a highly selective institution, so they're looking for students who have demonstrated excellence academically and in other realms as well. To be a strong candidate, you need to have a high GPA, strong SAT or ACT scores (if you're able to take the tests), and rigorous course work with many AP or IB level courses. These help in showing your academic abilities.

Dartmouth has an average weighted GPA ranging between 4.0-4.3, and it has an average SAT score between 1550 out of 1600. Starting with the 2024-2025 application cycle, submission of SAT/ACT scores is required as Dartmouth has abandoned its test optional policy.

In terms of extracurriculars, this is where you can truly distinguish yourself. Dartmouth is less interested in a long list of activities but more in how deeply you've been involved in a few areas. This can be demonstrated through leadership roles or significant accomplishments. Perhaps you've taken an active role in student organization, pursued independent research in a subject of interest, participated in competitive events, or volunteered extensively in your community. Essentially, they want to see dedication, initiative, and impact in these activities.

Your essays also play a crucial role. Personal statements and supplemental essays provide insight into your personality, your values, and what you'd contribute to the Dartmouth community. Showcase your intellectual curiosity, engagement with your community (whatever form it may take), and the unique perspective you can bring to the college.

It's worth noting that Dartmouth is one of the few Ivy League schools that still considers demonstrated interest, but it's a minor factor in your application. Reach out to admissions officers with questions, attend info sessions or tours if possible, and take advantage of any alumni or admissions interviews offered to you.

Lastly, applying Early Decision to Dartmouth can be a strategic move if Dartmouth is truly your first choice. Dartmouth admits a significant number of students from its early decision applicant pool.

Good luck in your college application process!
