Aiming to be an NMSC semifinalist. How do I stand out?

Hey fellow students. I'm grinding hard to become a National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) semifinalist. Apart from PSAT scores, what other factors do they consider? Any tips on making my academic profile stand out?

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) primarily uses your PSAT/NMSQT score as the determining factor for semifinalist status. This is different than many other scholarships that may place heavy emphasis on other factors of a student's profile such as grades, extracurricular activities, community service, or essays.

With that said, PSAT scores are paramount in this case. If your goal is to enhance your chances of becoming an NMSC semifinalist, your focus needs to squarely be on doing extremely well on that test. Here are some steps you can take:

1. Prep Work: Dedicate time for consistent preparation using reliable resources. Make a study schedule and stick to it.

2. Practice Tests: The College Board's SAT practice tests can be very valuable for PSAT preparation as well. Analyzing your performance on these can help you understand your strengths and areas that need more attention.

3. Brush up on Key Skills: Improvement doesn't happen overnight. Work on honing your reading comprehension, math, and grammar skills systematically over time.

4. Test Strategies: Learn effective strategies for each section of the test and how best to manage your time.

Remember to simulate testing conditions when you take the practice tests. This will help familiarize you with the environment and better manage the time pressure during the actual exam.

Now, for the finalists, NMSC does look at additional factors - academic records, school recommendations, student activities, leadership roles held, awards received, an essay—these elements matter for finalist standing and to receive the scholarship. If you reach that stage (which is likely if you achieve semifinalist status), start crafting an impressive narrative showcasing these aspects.

Levels of achievement and leadership roles in extracurricular activities are judged by admissions committees using the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars. Aim for activities which fall in Tier 1 or Tier 2 as these tiers showcase high level of achievement or leadership.

And last but not least, good luck! The process may seem daunting but note that with patience, persistence, and dedication, it is achievable!
