How wide is the ACT score range?

Hello folks! I've been studying for the ACT, but I'm not entirely certain about the scoring system. Can anyone clarify the range of scores possible on the ACT? Is there a certain score range that is considered 'competitive'? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! The ACT is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, with 36 being the highest possible score. This score is the Composite Score, which is the average of the four subject test scores (English, Math, Reading, and Science), each of which are also scored on a 1 to 36 scale.

Defining a 'competitive' score can depend on several factors including the specific colleges you're interested in, your personal academic goals, and the other components of your application. Generally, a 30 or above is usually considered competitive for many selective colleges, while Ivy League schools often have average ACT scores in the 33-35 range for admitted students.

Keep in mind that each college will have its own expectations. So, I recommend researching the average ACT scores for admitted students at your target colleges to get a better idea of what score you should aim for.
