SAT Requirements for Cornell?

Anyone know what the current SAT requirements for Cornell are? Also, does Cornell prefer the ACT over SAT or vice versa? I'm aiming for a competitive application so any insights or tips would be appreciated!

For the 2024-2025 application cycle, Cornell University is test-optional. What this essentially means is that you can choose whether or not to submit your SAT or ACT scores as part of your application. If you feel your scores accurately reflect your academic abilities and would strengthen your application, then you might consider submitting them. If not, you can opt not to submit them, and the admissions officers will place greater weight on the other parts of your application, like your course rigor, GPA, essays, and extracurriculars.

As for preferences between the SAT and ACT, Cornell does not have a preference for one test over the other. Whichever test you choose to take is entirely up to you, and you should pick the one you feel best showcases your abilities.

If you do choose to submit test scores, competitive applicants to Cornell will typically have strong scores. Before becoming test-optional due to the pandemic, Cornell admitted students who typically scored in the top percentiles on the SAT or ACT. However, remember that test scores are only one piece of your application, and Cornell will consider all aspects of your application in their review process.

When preparing for either test, consider using study resources like the College Board's resources for the SAT and the ACT's official prep guide. If you're taking the SAT, the Bluebook™ app offers a full-length practice test, mirroring the now fully-digital format of the SAT.

And a final note: since it's vital to present a well-rounded application, be sure to focus also on your academics, essays, and extracurricular activities. For instance, having high-reaching extracurriculars (think Tier 1 or Tier 2) will catch the eye of admissions teams just as much, if not more, than high test scores. Also, writing an outstanding personal essay is key—it's your chance to really show who you are beyond just numbers. Good luck!
