What are some examples of strong recommendation letters?

Hi folks! I'm getting ready to ask for recommendation letters soon, and I want to explain to my teachers exactly what should be in them. Can anyone share examples or at least key points that should be included in a strong college recommendation letter? You'd help lower my stress level lol.

Hello! I completely understand why you'd want to guide your teachers, it can make a significant difference given the weight recommendation letters carry in the admissions process.

A powerful letter of recommendation typically showcases two main things: your academic abilities and your personal qualities. For instance, if a math teacher is writing, it would be great if they could provide specific examples of your problem-solving skills or how you've mastered complex concepts. They might mention your participation and engagement in class, your ability to work in a team for group projects, or provide details about an impressive paper or presentation you did.

Personal qualities, such as leadership, resilience, empathy, or creativity, are equally important to highlight. Tales of you helping classmates, leading a group project, showing integrity in difficult situations, or having intellectual curiosity can distinguish you. It would be helpful if they discuss your particular contributions to classroom dynamics or school community.

Nonetheless, remember it's essential that these anecdotes and traits are genuinely observed and believed by the teacher. An insincere letter is often easy to spot. You can help your teachers recall these instances or traits by providing them an "activity list" capturing significant achievements, classroom contributions, or challenges you have overcome.

Lastly, the recommendation letter should ideally state the recommender’s unequivocal endorsement for the student being a good fit for the college in question, often summarizing or reinforcing the qualities and anecdotes they've talked about earlier in the letter.

Hope this helps! Good luck.
