Exploring PSAT and National Merit Scholarships - What Scores are Required?

Hey everyone, I'm a junior and I took my PSAT a while back. I've been hearing about this National Merit Scholarship and I'm curious. What kind of PSAT scores typically qualify for the National Merit Scholarship? Is this different state-by-state or is there a national cutoff? Thanks for your input!

For the National Merit Scholarship Program, your PSAT score is indeed very important. Specifically, it's your PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score - not your total PSAT score - that determines whether or not you qualify for recognition.

The Selection Index score is calculated differently than your total PSAT score. It doubles the sum of your Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores. Your PSAT score report should provide your Selection Index.

Now in terms of what scores you need, that's where it gets tricky since the cutoff varies by state and year. The cutoff is determined by the top 1% of scores in each state, so it fluctuates with the performance of the test-takers in your state for that given year. Typically, the cutoff scores range from the 140s to the 220s out of 228 possible points.

You should be able to find your state's current cutoff or estimate it based on previous years. Unfortunately, there isn't a universal "national" cutoff.

Remember that making the cutoff score doesn't automatically guarantee a scholarship. It only gives you Semifinalist status. To become a Finalist and compete for scholarships, there are additional requirements, like a consistently high academic record, an endorsement by your school principal, completing the scholarship application, and presenting SAT scores that confirm your earlier PSAT/NMSQT performance.

So while your PSAT score is a key initial step in pursuing the National Merit Scholarship, it's just one piece of the puzzle!
