Realistic Chance at Dartmouth Acceptance?

Hello everyone! I've been working really hard over the past years and Dartmouth is my dream school. Could someone shed some light on what might increase my chances of acceptance there? I know it's super competitive. Thank you!

Absolutely, happy to provide some insights here. Dartmouth, like many other Ivy League colleges, has a comprehensive and meticulous review process. They look at an array of factors beyond just your GPA or test scores, such as your extracurriculars, essays, and recommendation letters.

Given Dartmouth's competitive nature, you should aim to excel academically. The median GPA for Dartmouth is usually above a 4.0 (weighted), and Dartmouth has announced as of the 2024-2025 application cycle, it will no longer be test-optional, meaning that they will require all applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score. Strive for SAT and ACT scores in the top 25th percentile of admitted students.

When it comes to extracurricular activities, Dartmouth is more interested in students who've shown a strong focus or spike in a particular area to which they've dedicated significant time and energy. This could be an academic subject, sport, hobby, or community service. Strive to have 8-10 overall, but with a few where you've shown significant leadership or recognition.

Although Dartmouth is not officially known to factor demonstrated interest into their admission decisions, it doesn't hurt to engage with Dartmouth through available options such as college fairs, information sessions, and the like. This could provide you with valuable material when writing your essays, especially the "Why Dartmouth?" prompt.

Your essays are a crucial part of your application - they are where admissions officers get to know you on a more personal level. Dartmouth has several supplemental prompts where you'll be able to showcase your interest in the school, your intellectual curiosity, and your personality.

Letters of recommendation are essential too. Dartmouth requires letters of recommendation from your school counselor and two teachers. Choose recommenders who know you well and can speak to your strengths and potential within and beyond the classroom.

Lastly, you should consider applying Early Decision (ED) if Dartmouth is indeed your top choice. The ED acceptance rate is usually higher than the Regular Decision (RD) acceptance rate. However, remember that ED is binding, so only apply ED if you're absolutely sure Dartmouth is your top choice and financial aid isn't a significant concern for you. If you receive an inadequate financial aid award, you can back out, but it's best to check Dartmouth's Net Price Calculator ahead of time to get an estimate of what you might end up paying.

Keep in mind that regardless of how well you align with these criteria, Ivy League colleges are highly selective, and a strong profile doesn't guarantee acceptance. But by optimizing these areas, you can put forth your best application possible! Best of luck.
