When should I start applying for colleges?

Hello, I'm a junior this year and I'm wondering: when should I roughly start to apply for colleges? Is the earlier, the better or should I wait for a certain period? I've got my college list ready but mostly feeling clueless about when to make my move. Any advice appreciated!

Hello there. Applying to colleges is a significant step, and your timing can certainly have an impact.

The actual application process begins in your senior year of high school, around the fall. This is when most colleges open up their applications for the next academic year.

However, there are different timelines for submission depending on whether you're applying via Early Decision (ED), Early Action (EA), Regular Decision (RD), or Rolling admissions.

ED and EA applications are typically due in November of your senior year. ED is a binding agreement — if you're accepted, you must attend the school, given that all your financial needs are met. EA, on the other hand, isn't binding. These early application rounds can yield slightly higher acceptance rates at some colleges, and you usually get your decision by mid-December.

RD deadlines are often in January, with decisions typically arriving in late March or early April. Some schools will have rolling admissions where you can apply any time until a final deadline and get a decision within a few weeks.

So, while you can't technically start applying until your senior year, you can certainly start preparing your application materials now, in your junior year. Take time to perfect your essays and gather all the necessary documents. The more prepared you are before the application opens, the smoother the process will be.

Also, don't forget about financial aid applications! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opens on October 1st of your senior year, and it's generally a good idea to complete it as soon as possible.

I hope this provides some clarity to your question and aids in your college application process.
