Looking for design school suggestions

Hello, friends! I'm kind of an art fanatic and I'd like to continue that in college. Anyone have recommendations for top design schools in the US? Also, what can I expect in an undergrad design program?

Sure, happy to give some recommendations based on the reputation of the art and design programs. One of the leading design schools in the U.S. is Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). It's often considered one of the top art and design schools in the world. Other noteworthy institutions include Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, and California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). For universities with strong art and design, you could consider the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), Carnegie Mellon University, and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

In an undergraduate design program, you can expect the first year to largely focus on foundational courses, improving your drawing skills, color theory, 2D and 3D design principles, and learning various art forms. As you move more into your major, you'll start having more studio-based classes focused on your specific design discipline like graphic design, industrial design, or interior design. This will include project-based work where you develop a portfolio, which is crucial for jobs post-graduation.

You may also have opportunities for internships, study abroad programs focused on design, and industry collaboration projects, depending on the resources of your chosen school. In addition, expect to have critiques or "crits" where you present your work to your class and instructor for feedback. This is a common feature in design programs and an invaluable learning tool.

Remember that it's not just about the program's reputation—always consider if the program's curriculum, philosophy, and faculty align with your specific career goals and artistic interests. Good luck!
