NMSQT Qualifying Scores - What's the deal?

So junior year is pretty stress and on top of that, I've set my sights on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). Do you guys know what scores I should be aiming for? Is there a specific range to try to put myself in the running?

The overall score needed to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship (NMSQT) varies from year to year and by state, because it's based on the top scores within each state.

The NMSQT Selection Index is calculated by doubling your Reading and Writing scores, adding your Math scores, and dividing by 10. The overall Selection Index ranges from 48 to 228.

Historically, the Selection Index scores needed to qualify for National Merit Semifinalist status have ranged from the low 210s to the low 220s. In states where competition is highest, like California, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, the scores required have been towards the upper end of that range. In states with less competition, the required score might be a bit lower.

However, keep in mind that these are just general guidelines based on past years. You should aim to do as well as possible on the test because the specific qualifying threshold can fluctuate annually.

And lastly, don't forget to use the resources available to help you prepare, like PSAT/NMSQT practice tests. These should give you a good idea of how you're performing and areas that you could improve on before you sit for the actual test. Hope this is helpful and good luck with your PSAT/NMSQT!
