What Makes A Perfect SAT Score?

Like most, I'm preparing for the SAT and I've heard of 'perfect scores'. Can someone demystify this for me? What exactly constitutes a 'perfect SAT score'? Your insights would be much appreciated.

A perfect score on the SAT is 1600. The SAT is divided into two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW), and Math. Each section is scored on a scale from 200 to 800, so achieving a perfect 800 in both sections would yield the highest possible combined score of 1600.

To add more context, the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section is composed of a Reading test and a Writing and Language test. The Reading test contains 52 questions which you will need to answer within 65 minutes, while the Writing and Language test consists of 44 questions with a time allotment of 35 minutes.

The Math section is split into two parts, one that can be completed with a calculator and one without. However, since the SAT became fully digital in 2024, you can use your calculator for both parts. There are a total of 44 math questions.

Getting a perfect score is highly competitive as it puts you in the top percentile of test takers. Remember, a perfect score is an admirable goal, but many colleges consider scores close to perfect as similarly competitive. Persistence and preparation, including practice tests and targeted skill-building, can substantially improve your score. It's not just about perfection—it's about maximizing your individual potential. Use resources like the CollegeBoard's practice materials and Khan Academy to help you along the way.
