ACT Test Fees - Is it Worth the Price?

Yo peeps, anyone has any handle on the cost of ACT? You know, all-inclusive like registration and stuff. Just trying to make sure this doesn't burn a massive hole in my savings. Also, is it really worth taking the ACT over the SAT? Thanks for dropping any wisdom you might have.

Howdy! The cost for ACT registration as of 2024 is $68 without the writing section, and $93 if you choose to include the writing portion. Remember, though, that there are additional fees to consider, like if you're running late with registration ($38 late fee) or if you need to change your testing site ($44 change fee). Fee waivers are available for those who qualify, so definitely look into that if needed.

As for whether the ACT is worth taking over the SAT, it's less about worth and more about fit. The tests have different formats: the ACT is more of a broad assessment across a range of subjects (English, Math, Reading, and Science) and the SAT concentrates more on Reading, Writing, and Math only, but in a more depth-oriented manner.

The ACT also tends to have more straightforward questions and a quicker pacing compared to the SAT which focuses on in-depth analysis and reasoning skills. The best way to find out which suits you better is by taking a few practice tests for both. You can find free practice tests online.

Lastly, consider the colleges you're applying to. Some schools may have a preference for one test over the other, however most U.S. colleges currently accept both SAT and ACT scores. It's always best to check with the specific schools you're targeting.

So my advice would be: take sample tests, understand your strengths, and then decide whether the ACT's cost is an investment you're willing to make. Good luck!
