Is a 20 a decent ACT score?

Alright, got my ACT scores back and, well, it's a 20. Not sure how to feel about it. What kinds of schools are within my reach? Is it worth considering a retake?

A 20 on the ACT is around the national average, which is 19.8, so it's not an unfavorable score. However, the colleges within your reach directly depend on other aspects of your application, like your GPA, essays, extracurricular activities, etc.

From an admissions standpoint, competitive or selective colleges usually require higher ACT scores. For instance, popular state schools often look for scores in the mid to high 20s, and many selective private institutions have even higher averages, mostly in the 30s.

That being said, there are many colleges where a score of 20 will be acceptable. Some schools don't weigh standardized test scores as heavily in their admissions process, and other schools may be test-optional, meaning an ACT score isn't required for admission.

As for retaking the ACT, you should consider it if you believe you can significantly improve your score. If you decide to do so, ensure to prepare adequately by learning the test format, practicing with sample questions, and taking timed practice tests. However, remember that focusing on other aspects of your application like increasing your GPA or enhancing your extracurricular activities can also impact your admissions chances positively.

Remember, a standardized test is just one piece of your application, and schools evaluate candidates holistically. So don't feel disheartened about having a 20 on the ACT. Focus on presenting a comprehensive and compelling story about who you are as a student and individual.
